Why do Americans tend to be fatter than Europeans?

Europeans don't eat out as much because it is too expensive. They enjoy cooking at home and when doing so eat more healthfully. Less fast food, salt, and additives. Also, portion size is 1/3 to 1/2 less than many of the portions sizes served in America. Restaurant food is well-known to be additive prone and high in calories. You tend to overeat, especially when you add dessert.

You may hear that Europeans eat more butter, but what's wrong with butter? Butter, especially if it comes from free-range cows is good for you. Back in the day, the negative publicity put out by the margarine and vegetable oil lobbies smeared butter as being high in fat. Low-fat diets were the talk back then, low-fat good, high fat bad. Well, that is just not true, good butter, olive oils, and other high-fat things are actually good for you. The battle in regards to good fats is a misleading one and gets a bad rap and is another discussion for another time.

Many Europeans are just more active than many Americans. Hiking, running, biking, soccer, swimming are all favorite pass times with many. This keeps you off the sofa and staying trim.

Life in many European cities is better suited for walking because the distance in between cities was developed long before the automobile. Almost like forced exercise, but really has been a way of life for many, many years.

Europeans do a lot of things differently from Americans, but one thing they seem to do better at is that of staying in shape.
