Health Matters: How to Eat Healthy - NBC 2
When it comes to being healthy, there are many options on how to eat, but dietitians say each diet comes with its own do’s and don’ts. “The Adkins diet, South beach diet, as well as Ketogenic diet, it’s kind of like a see-saw effect; you’re trading one macronutrient for another,” explained Ryan Morrison, a clinical dietitian with Lee Health.
But recent reports indicate low carb diets are what’s trending. “Typically for those low carbohydrate diets you’re eliminating carbohydrates, from 50 to 150 of carbohydrate grams a day, and sometimes as low as 20 grams a day,” said Morrison. That means you’re increasing the amount of fat in your diet.
“For the diets that are as low as 20 grams a day, your body stops using glucose or blood sugar as your main source of energy and starts relying on the fat source for those energy sources,” he said.
Research shows low carb diets can result in short-term weight loss, improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and increase your good cholesterol.
