From Supercows To Algae Suits: Here's Why Speculative Design Will Drive The Next Revolution In Food - Forbes

Paul Gong is designing the cow of tomorrow. As a speculative designer, he doesn't need a ranch or farm. Instead he designs cows on a computer and outputs the results on a 3D printer.

One of Gong's recent models is currently on view at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin as part of an exhibition and accompanying book on the future of food. With muscular shoulders nearly engulfing its diminutive head, the creature has the appearance of a bovine bodybuilder. This animal may well represent tomorrow's cattle, enhanced through biotechnology to optimize butchery and produce the most desirable cuts of beef. As design fiction, it offers a way to assess a plausible technological trajectory before industry makes it reality.
